This work reflects on the idea that time may not simply move forward in a straight line, but instead remain through folds and accumulations.

Titles and Music

The titles of these six works come from songs that became starting points for the creative process.

However, the works are not direct illustrations of the songs. Each began with words, rhythms, emotions, and sensations of time that remained with me after listening.

Music contains repetition, pauses, shifts in intensity, and layers of sound. Recorded sounds may overlap, and unexpected combinations can become part of a larger structure.

My process also involves layering fragments of paper and text, applying color, covering, removing, and rebuilding the surface. I often feel a connection between the structure of music and the physical act of making.

For example, in “Tomorrow Never Knows,” the experience of multiple sounds overlapping became connected to the way fragments of memory and language accumulate within the work.

The white that covers much of the surface is not empty space. It functions as a layer of time that holds what has accumulated underneath. For this reason, the titles are not simply references to songs. They also act as entry points back into the sensations and thoughts from which each work emerged.

Music and Time

When listening to music, not only the present moment but also memories and emotions from the past can suddenly return.

Even within a song lasting only a few minutes, repetition, pauses, intensity, and silence can change the way time is experienced.

For me, music does not simply provide an image for a work. It acts as an entry point that sets time and emotion in motion.

Painting What Remains After the Sound

These works do not depict musical notes, instruments, or music itself.

Instead, I translate the emotions, rhythms, memories, and sensations of time that remain after listening into color, material, layering, worn surfaces, and traces.

Just as something can remain after a sound has disappeared, I want the works to hold traces of time that are not immediately visible.

Notes from the Time of Making

While creating these works, I also recorded thoughts about music and the creative process in ART BLOG.

What I felt at the moment of making is not always the same as what I feel when looking back at the works now.

By preserving those earlier writings, I can return to sensations that existed only at that particular moment and reconsider them from my present perspective.

Looking Back at the Six Works

When I made these works, I approached each one individually. Looking at them together now, however, I can see themes that continue into my current practice: time, memory, emotion, rhythm, and music.

An artwork does not necessarily end when it is completed. With time, new relationships between works can become visible, and meanings that could not be articulated at the moment of making may begin to emerge.

These six works remain as traces that continue to connect with my practice today.

「COLLECTIVE SELF」

「COLLECTIVE SELF」

COLLECTIVE SELF

4｜今日の日付と「I AM HERE」を残す

I AM HERE

This “Letter to Your Future Self — 90 Days” workshop grew out of a participatory workshop I created for my solo exhibition
COLLECTIVE SELF.

You imagine yourself 90 days from now and leave a letter with your thoughts and feelings from today.
By looking toward the future, you may begin to see your present self a little differently.
It is a small self-guided workshop you can do on your own.

This workshop may be for you if…

You have something you want to do, but have not been able to start

You keep saying, “I’ll do it someday”

You would like to imagine yourself a little further into the future

You want to leave a record of how you feel today

You would like to send a few words to your future self

You want to take a little time to reflect on yourself

This workshop is not only about achieving a goal.
You can simply say hello to your future self or leave a few words about how you feel today.

All you need is paper, a pen, and an envelope.
When you open the letter 90 days from now, how will the person you are today look to you then?
Enjoy that small sense of anticipation, and feel free to give it a try.

What is a 90-day letter to your future self?

We often think,
“Someday I would like to do this,”
without deciding when that “someday” might be.

In this workshop, we choose a future that is not too far away:
90 days from today.

Three months may be too short to completely transform your life.
But it can be an interesting amount of time to begin something new
or to move forward with something that has been stuck for a long time.

I tried this workshop myself.

I decided that within 90 days,
I would finally organize the body of artwork I had been putting off dealing with for a long time.
About 90 days later, I had organized more than 230 works,
assigned inventory numbers,
and entered them into a digital database.

Writing a letter does not guarantee that something will be achieved.

But in my case,
imagining myself 90 days in the future changed
“I’ll do it someday” into
“I’ll try to do it during these 90 days.”

Read about my own 90-day experience

I also wrote a letter to my future self and opened it 90 days later.
In this reflection, I look back on what changed, what did not,
and how the experience connected to my artistic practice and the idea of
COLLECTIVE SELF.

Read my 90-day reflection →

How this workshop connects to COLLECTIVE SELF

In COLLECTIVE SELF,
I explore the idea that the self is not something fixed.

Memories, experiences, relationships, encounters,
and everyday events overlap and continually shape who we are.

And this present moment is also becoming one of the fragments
that will shape who we are in the future.

Past Self → Present Self → Future Self

These selves do not exist separately.
They are connected through time.

So this workshop is not only about looking toward the future.

By imagining your future self, you begin to look again at who you are now.

Then, 90 days later,
your present self meets the words left behind by your past self.

For me, experiencing this overlap of time
is also part of the idea behind COLLECTIVE SELF.

How to write a letter to your future self in 5 steps

Akemi

Let’s try it!

You do not need any special preparation.
Find a little quiet time and imagine yourself 90 days from now.

There is no correct answer,
and your writing does not need to be beautiful.
Simply leave your future self the thoughts you have today.

What you need

You only need three things.

Paper · Pen · Envelope

You do not need special stationery.
A page from a notebook, a sheet of writing paper,
or any paper you like is fine.

1｜Choose a date 90 days from today

First, find the date approximately 90 days from today.

You can use any online date calculator by searching for
“90 days from today.”

Write that date on the envelope as the
“Open on” date.

The important point is to choose the date now,
instead of deciding that you will open the letter “someday.”

2｜Imagine yourself 90 days from now

Before writing the letter,
take a moment to imagine your future self.

You might begin with these questions:

How would you like to feel 90 days from now?

Is there something you want to do but have not started yet?

Is there something you keep saying you will do “someday”?

Would you be happy if it had moved forward a little in 90 days?

Is there anything you want to tell your future self from where you are today?

You do not need to answer every question.
If even one of them stays with you,
begin your letter from there.

3｜Write a letter to your future self

There is no required format.
If you are not sure how to begin,
you can use something like this:

Dear me, 90 days from now,

Right now, I have been thinking about…

Something I want to do but have not been able to start is…

In 90 days, I hope I will be…

I do not need to have done everything,
but I would be happy if something had moved forward, even a little.

This is only an example.
You are free to write whatever you want.

You do not need to write a goal.
You can write a greeting to your future self,
something that made you happy,
something you are worried about,
or simply how you feel today.

Leave a small record of who you are now.

4｜Add today’s date and “I AM HERE”

When you finish your letter,
write today’s date.

Then add the words:

I AM HERE

Although the letter is written toward the future,
it is also a record saying,
“I was here, today.”

5｜Seal the letter and keep it for 90 days

Place the letter in an envelope and write:
“Open on [date]”
on the front.

Keep it somewhere safe,
such as a bookshelf, drawer, or box.

It can also help to add
“Open my future-self letter”
to your phone or calendar on that date.

You will not have the surprise of receiving something in the mail,
but this simple method costs nothing and allows you to begin today.

The important thing is:
once you seal the envelope, try not to read it again until the opening date.

Opening it after you have almost forgotten what you wrote
may help you notice the difference between who you were 90 days ago
and who you are now.

Other ways to send something to your future self

Keeping the letter yourself is the simplest method,
but there are also services that store and mail letters in the future,
as well as digital services that send messages or emails on a future date.

If you like the idea of receiving something unexpectedly
after you have almost forgotten about it,
you may enjoy using one of those services.

Because available services and prices may change,
please check the latest information before using one.

“I AM HERE” cards created during the COLLECTIVE SELF workshop

During the COLLECTIVE SELF workshop,
participants wrote letters to their future selves
and also created small cards using fragments of collage.

Each card includes the date it was created
and the words “I AM HERE.”

Even though we shared the same place and time,
each person chose a different fragment.

I have gathered the cards anonymously in an online archive.
For me, they are also a record of meeting the participants
and sharing the same moment during the exhibition.

Meet the words of your past self 90 days later

Writing a letter to your future self is not about predicting the future,
and it is not a method that guarantees you will achieve a goal.

It is simply a way to leave a little of what you are thinking and feeling today
for a future version of yourself.

Then, 90 days later,
you meet those words again.

Some things may have changed.
Other things may be exactly the same.

But noticing those differences can become an opportunity
to see your own passage through time in a new way.

Who you are today is also one of the fragments
that will shape who you become.

What would you like to tell yourself 90 days from now?

日付と「I AM HERE」を残す

COLLECTIVE SELF

「COLLECTIVE SELF」

参加者のみなさんの「I AM HERE」

「I AM HERE」のカードは、

English Summary

I created the “Letter to Your Future Self” workshop as part of my ongoing project, COLLECTIVE SELF — I Am Here, Now. During the workshop, participants imagined themselves 90 days in the future, wrote a letter to that future self, selected a collage fragment, and left the words “I AM HERE” together with the date.

I also took part in the workshop myself. When I imagined who I wanted to be 90 days later, I wrote about something I had postponed for years: organizing and revisiting my past artworks.

Three months later, I realized that this task had actually begun to move forward. I had reviewed and organized more than 230 works, assigned identification numbers, created a database, and rebuilt my Gallery page. More importantly, seeing the works together allowed me to recognize connections that I had not noticed before. Works made in different years began to reveal recurring ideas, relationships, and traces of the same questions.

The workshop is not intended simply as a tool for achieving goals. What interested me was the way imagining a future self brought my attention back to the present. Instead of thinking “I will do it someday,” the question became: “If I want this to be different in 90 days, what can I do now?”

This experience also deepened my understanding of COLLECTIVE SELF. I see the self not as something fixed, but as something continually shaped through fragments of memory, experience, relationships, and everyday events.

The person who writes the letter, the person who opens it 90 days later, and the person who existed before both of them are not separate. Past, present, and future meet again through the letter, forming new relationships across time.

In this sense, the workshop became more than an activity. It became a small experiment in how a change in perspective can reconfigure our relationship with time, memory, and ourselves.

The question I continue to carry from this experience is simple:
What would you like to leave for the person you will be 90 days from now?

English Summary

Why do we continue to feel that something is missing, even when our lives are materially rich and filled with choices?

This question began with a personal experience. I sometimes find myself continuing to search for better options even after I have already found something that is enough. The more choices and information available, the more difficult it can become to feel satisfied with what is already here.

Social media can intensify this feeling. We are constantly exposed to selected moments from other people’s lives—travel, work, homes, achievements, and experiences. Without noticing it, we may begin to measure our own lives against these images and feel that something is lacking.

I have started to wonder whether the problem is always that we do not have enough, or whether we have become less able to see what is already present. When our attention is continually directed toward a better future, another possibility, or someone else’s life, the present can easily become something we pass through without noticing.

This thought unexpectedly connected with my own artistic practice. I have long worked with fragments of everyday life—pieces of paper, traces of time, memories, fleeting light and shadow, textures, and small things that might otherwise be overlooked. I realized that much of my practice may be rooted in the simple act of looking again at what is already here.

For me, art does not need to provide an answer. It can instead shift the direction of our attention. It can invite us to stop, look more closely, change our distance, or encounter something familiar from another perspective.

Perhaps the feeling of “not enough” does not come only from actual lack. It may also arise when our attention is always directed somewhere other than here.

This remains an open question in my practice:
What are we overlooking, even though it is already here?

English Summary

This article reflects on Idea Box by Katsuji Wakisaka, a book that explores how creative ideas can be found not in extraordinary experiences, but in everyday life.

What stayed with me most was the idea that creativity does not always begin with something completely new. A small flower along a familiar path, light entering through a window, an ordinary object, or a shape we usually overlook can become the starting point for making.

The book also made me think again about the importance of changing the way we look. Design is not only about inventing something from nothing. Sometimes it begins by seeing what is already there from a different perspective.

This idea is closely connected to my own artistic practice, but I also noticed an important difference. I regularly collect photographs, visual fragments, materials, and thoughts from everyday life. Yet for me, creation does not end with collecting them.

I return to these fragments over time, select them, combine them, shift their relationships, and reconfigure them into something new. In this sense, my practice is less about simply gathering fragments of daily life and more about weaving them together again.

Looking back through an archive can also change meaning. A photograph taken months ago, a piece of paper, or a thought written down at another time may enter a new relationship with something from the present and begin to suggest a different work.

Reading this book helped me recognize more clearly that my creative process often moves through a cycle:
notice, collect, revisit, select, and reconfigure.

Perhaps creativity does not always require us to search far away for something new. Sometimes it begins by returning to what is already around us—and seeing how it can be connected differently.

We held a special, hands-on workshop born from the solo exhibition “COLLECTIVE SELF.” Here, I would like to dive a little deeper into the story and the thoughts behind this experience.

At the conclusion of the ‘COLLECTIVE SELF’ journey, visitors were invited to select a single fragment, engrave it with the date, and write a letter to their future self three months away. While it may appear to be a simple act of letter-writing, this experience is deeply rooted in the exhibition’s core philosophy: the belief that fragments of the past are woven into our present, and that the present moment, in turn, creates our future.

In this article, I will unveil how this workshop resonates with other works in the exhibition—such as the ‘Monthly Calendar’ and ‘Photography’ series—and how it serves as a ‘bridge across time,’ connecting your ‘here and now’ to the future. I hope to share the intricate process and the heartfelt thoughts behind this design.

Rather than just observing, visitors became participants. This was a place to re-weave one’s own story while the heart was still moved by the art. The experience of viewing transformed into a time of self-reflection.

By sealing current feelings into a letter to the future, we reconnect our timeline. It serves as “A bridge across time” to keep in touch with who you truly are in this fast-paced world.

At the venue, participants took their time observing the materials and choosing one based on their intuition. The time spent hesitating and choosing was itself an essential part of the workshop.

“The date is not just a number, but proof that you were living in this moment.” By stamping and placing the “I am here” sticker, you anchor your current self, resonating with the “Photography” series.

Ninety days later, a single letter and its accompanying QR code reconnect each participant with the memory of the exhibition.
The cards created by every participant throughout the exhibition are gradually woven together into a shared online archive.

This archive is not intended simply to preserve the artworks. Rather, it exists to preserve the unique moment of “now” that each person lived and experienced—bringing those moments together as one collective memory.

COLLECTIVE SELF is not completed by my work alone. It becomes whole through the overlapping moments, memories, and lived experiences of everyone who visited this place.

English Summary

Rachel Carson’s The Sense of Wonder reminded me of something that is also central to my artistic practice: before trying to understand the world, we can first allow ourselves to feel it.

We often approach things by asking what they are, what they mean, or whether we understand them correctly. Yet some of the most meaningful moments begin before explanation—a particular texture, a change in light, a sound, a smell, or something we cannot fully explain but feel drawn toward.

Carson’s writing encouraged me to think again about the importance of experiencing the world through the senses. The surfaces and materials I use in my own work—layers of paper, worn edges, peeling surfaces, roughness, and traces left by time—are not simply visual elements. They carry sensations, memories, and evidence of change.

I am often attracted to ordinary things that might otherwise be overlooked: a receipt once held by someone, a fragment from an old book, marks left on a wall, paper altered by time, or light after rain. Collecting these fragments is also a way of recording what has made me stop and feel something.

For me, abstraction is not about finding the correct meaning of an image. It can be an entrance into our own perception. Through color, form, texture, rhythm, and material relationships, an abstract work can create a space in which viewers become aware of their own sensations.

To have a “sense of wonder” is perhaps to look at the familiar world as if encountering it for the first time. This idea continues to influence the way I photograph, collect materials, and make work from fragments of everyday life.

I do not need to search far away for something extraordinary. A small shift in attention can reveal that the everyday world is already filled with traces of time, beauty, and quiet surprise.
