(Artist Talk by Akemi)

Artist Talk: The Philosophy of Perception

The Encounter with Abstraction: A Personal Turning Point

I was once an ordinary corporate employee who rarely set foot in an art museum. It wasn't until I left my job at 30 to become a self-taught designer that my curiosity for painting was piqued. For a long time, I held the misconception that art was a sacred realm reserved only for those with innate genius.

The turning point came with the birth of my child. I felt a sudden urge to challenge myself with something I had never done before, which led me to Musashino Art University. There, I encountered abstract art for the first time. It was a revelation. My mentor’s words—"Abstraction is liberation! There are no wrongs in art"—shattered my preconceptions and fundamentally changed my life.

Materiality: Finding Beauty in the Mundane

Through abstraction, I realized that true beauty is hidden within the mundane. The traces of time etched into old objects, the organic rhythms of nature, and the subtle thrills of daily life became my muse.

These "fragments of everyday life"—discarded flyers, newspaper clippings, a haunting line from a film, or an unfinished work in the studio—serve as the physical and emotional building blocks of my art. Every piece is a constellation of these scattered memories.

The Creative Process: A Dialogue with Chance

I do not start with a finished image in mind. My process is a raw, instinctive dialogue between the canvas and the fragments of my memory. I embrace the unpredictability and find joy in the "happy accidents" that occur when emotions meet material.

A Manifesto of Presence in an Information Flood

In today's digital age, we are constantly engulfed by a torrent of information. Without conscious effort, the precious fragments of our lives—the words that touched us or the fleeting beauty of a sunset—are washed away by the waves of time.

My art is an act of resistance against this erasure. By capturing these tiny fragments and anchoring them to the "Now," I am performing a personal manifesto: a declaration of selfhood to ensure I do not lose my way in this information-saturated world.

I am deeply grateful for this opportunity to share my journey with you. Thank you for being part of this experience.
